An Evening With Jeremy Deller

Fri, 14/4/2023, 6:00 PM

Filmscreening in cooperation with the Gartenbaukino on the occasion of the exhibition Jeremy Deller. Warning Graphic Content. Prints & Posters 1993–2023.

Jeremy Deller
will give a short introduction before each film and, together with Nicolas Jasmin, will perform a fulminant DJ set in the cinema foyer after the films.

6:15 PM:
PUTIN'S HAPPY (2019, 45 min)

Putin's Happy joins Deller's canon of politically conscious works that often explore so-called "Britishness" – the people, icons, myths, folklore and cultural and political history of England. The film was shot in and around Parliament Square between January and March 2019 and features opponents and supporters of the Brexit deal alike. The title is a reference to claims of Russian interference in the referendum, following widespread allegations of disinformation campaigns in the media and on social media.

7:15 PM:EVERYBODY IN THE PLACE: AN INCOMPLETE HISTORY OF
 BRITAIN 1984-1992 (2018, 62 min)
Acid House marked the beginning of a new era in Britain that would be remembered as the Second Summer of Love. In Everybody in the Place: An Incomplete History of Britain 1984-1992, we join Jeremy Deller and an A-level class in poli-tical education of a special kind: viewed through the lens of the rave culture of the 1980s and early 1990s, the documentary highlights the cultural, social and, above all, political changes in Britain since the Thatcher era. Using film archive footage, Jeremy Deller traces the history of raving protest movements and tells how dance floors were used to demonstrate against the political zeitgeist.

8:30 PM:OUR HOBBY IS DEPECHE MODE (2006, 67 min)
Our Hobby is Depeche Mode by Jeremy Deller and Nick Abrahams follows the band's passionate and die-hard international fan base. Deller and Abrahams travelled to Mexico, the US, Germany, Russia, Brazil and Canada in a matter of weeks to meet fans of the synth-pop group and explore their rituals and deep connection to the band.
