Philipp Fleischmann
13 Film Works

7/3/2025—18/5/2025
The artist Philipp Fleischmann (1985 in Hollabrunn, AT) persistently crosses and modifies the boundaries between visual art and film, and is regarded as one of the key figures of a younger generation of moving image artists. His work draws from the tradition of the Austrian film avant-garde and the institutional critique of the 1990s, continuing these movements while also critically reframing them.

The medium of film and the physical materiality of the analog film strip serve as the starting point for an in-depth engagement with infrastructural parameters. A central element in Fleischmann’s practice is his rebellion against the hierarchical structures of the cinematic camera. To bypass the issues of representation inherent in the camera, he has been building his own cameras and displays for over two decades, which remain flexible and adaptable in both form and function. This opens up the possibility to recombine filmic parameters in diverse, context-sensitive, and performative ways.

Fleischmann's practice manifests in various forms: from cinematic mappings of entire buildings to ephemeral cinematographic gestures, as well as the independent fusion of film and sculpture, which the artist refers to as film sculptures. This series, which he has been developing since 2022, will be presented in its latest iteration for the first time at fjk3. Through his work, he critically and playfully connects cinematic expressions with themes such as the mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion within institutional spaces, methods of appropriation and self-determination, resistance against normative forms of representation, and currently, the exploration of the possibilities of queer abstraction.

The exhibition 13 Film Works brings together, for the first time, works for both the cinema space and the exhibition space in a single show, featuring numerous new productions and offering a comprehensive insight into the artistic work of Philipp Fleischmann. 13 Film Works is Fleischmann’s largest solo exhibition to date.

Philipp Fleischmann works as an artist and filmmaker in Vienna, Austria. Since 2014, he has been the artistic director of the School Friedl Kubelka for Independent Film, where he himself studied in 2006. Further studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Dorit Margreiter Choy and at the Royal Danish Art Academy with Gerard Byrne.
