On the occasion of her exhibition Liaison, artist Liesl Raff has created an exclusive edition of 12 unique pieces. In reference to her work roof, which takes up the motif of a palm leaf shelter, she has poured differently colored latex over dried palm leaves.
The palm has always symbolized protection and durability, peace, fertility, and beauty across various cultures. In English, the term palm refers not only to the plant itself but also to the inner surface of the hand. In this linguistic parallel, the human need to anthropomorphize forms in nature is revealed. The inseparable connection of natural latex and palm leaves – both materials subject to the process of change – gives roof piece an animistic corporeality that, like many of the artist's works, evokes a tactile desire.
