Jeremy Deller
Warning Graphic Content

3/3/2023—7/5/2023
Splashed in huge letters across the British flag, Welcome to the Shitshow is the greeting English artist and Turner Prize winner Jeremy Deller (a Londoner born in 1966) extends to visitors of his WARNING GRAPHIC CONTENT exhibition at fjk3 – Contemporary Art Space. Over 120 print and poster works are arrayed in a gaudy all-over color installation, offering a comprehensive overview of thirty years of his graphic art for the first time in the German-speaking world. WARNING GRAPHIC CONTENT is a vibrant kaleidoscope of Jeremy Deller’s artistic thinking. Effortlessly, it seems, he aligns the poetic with the polemical, the universal with the personal, the local with the global.

Posters referencing British music legends such as David Bowie, Depeche Mode, and the Beatles, or the rave party and acid house scene are testimony to Jeremy Deller’s keen interest in pop and subcultural phenomena. Statements such as "Prince Harry Kills me", "Thank God For Immigrants", "Cronyism Is English For Corruption", or "Farage in Prison" revolve around aspects of British history and cultural identity, ranging from the late 1980s to recent events of the post-Brexit era. With "Every Age Has Its Own Fascism" and "An Immigrant Saving a Racists Life X 500,000", the artist takes a critical stance on questions of migration and class, which have gained new prominence and urgency in the wake of the corona pandemic.

Deller began experimenting with graphic prints in the early 1990s, producing a series of posters for imaginary exhibitions devoted to musicians. Ever since, posters, flyers, decals, and fanzines have served as the preferred means of expression for this deeply socially-minded and political artist, along with performances, film, video, and public concerts. Quick, highly topical, and often produced in large quantities, they are targeted at a mass audience outside the institutionalized exhibition circuit and represent Deller’s democratic and egalitarian convictions, which are reflected in a variety of collaborative projects.

The exhibition has been produced in cooperation with The Modern Institute, Glasgow (GB), Art:Concept, Paris (F), MAMCO Museé d’Art Moderne, Genf (CH), The Civic, Barnsley (GB), La Criée centre d‘art contemporain, Rennes (F).
