Ján Mančuška: Untitled, 2009

Jan Mančuška has created a series of film-based works that reveal his interest in non-linear, fragmentary narrative forms. Without showing film in the conventional sense, they question the methodology of narrative construction and refer to the fragile character of reality and its cinematic representation. The media-ontological moment in many of the works lies in the formal reduction to light and filmstrips as material constants of the medium of film. The light bulb as an object and as an illuminant is a recurring subject in Mančuška's work, as is the theme of doubling through reflection and projection. This sketch shows the light bulb as an oscillating light source projecting an image of itself. This first sketch for an artwork was not realized, the sketch itself became the artwork, which was published in an edition of 30.
